Hiking, Golf & Cargo Shorts, in plain words
This is the bench Pudolla makers argue about most, because a hiking short has to do two contradictory things: hold a phone, a map and a bar without swinging, and still let the knee come up on a step.
The bench, counted
| What the label says | Pages | Share of the bench |
|---|---|---|
| With zip pockets | 165 | 63% |
| UPF 50+, per the maker | 154 | 59% |
| Quick-dry, per the maker | 219 | 83% |
| Water resistant or waterproof, per the maker | 224 | 85% |
| Women's cut | 14 | 5% |
| Fabric stated in percent on the label | 10 | 4% |
The cargo pairs answer with pockets on the thigh that zip shut and sit flat. The golf pairs answer with slash pockets at the front and a clean 7, 9 or 11 inch line to the knee. The hiking pairs answer with a lighter shell and a gusset where it counts.
Every shell on this bench is a woven, not a knit: nylon or polyester with a few percent spandex where the maker states it. That is the reason they hold a crease and take a belt. The maker calls most of them quick-dry and some water resistant. Water resistant means a shower beads off for a while. It does not mean you can sit in a stream.
How to pick the size
These run true to your usual waist, and most pairs give the waist in inches rather than a letter. The inseam decides everything: 5 and 7 inch for hot days and short legs, 9 for most people, 11 and 13 when you want the knee covered. If you are between sizes and plan to wear them all day, take the larger one.
What it does not do. Water resistant is not waterproof. A cargo pocket on the thigh will swing if you put a full bottle in it, however well it zips.
