Running & Gym Shorts, in plain words

The first thing the Pudolla studio ever made was a pair of 5 inch running shorts with a zip pocket on the hip, because a phone in an ordinary pocket bounces against the thigh on every stride.

That pair is still in the range. Everything else on this bench grew out of it: a 3 inch pair for people who want nothing near the knee, and a 7 and a 9 inch pair for the gym and the walk home. The 2-in-1 version has a knit liner sewn in, so nothing needs to go on underneath.

Every card says the inseam in inches, whether there is a liner, and how many pockets there are. The zip pockets are on the hips or at the back. The liner pocket, where there is one, is the place for a key.

The outer shell on most pairs is a polyester knit the maker calls quick-dry, and it does dry on a fence in an afternoon. What it is not is a compression short: the liner holds things in place on a 5K, and on a long run some people still wear their own.

How to pick the size

Take your usual waist size. The waist is elastic with a drawstring on every pair, so the number that matters is the inseam: 3 inch shows the whole thigh, 5 sits mid-thigh, 7 and 9 reach the knee. Between sizes, go down on the 2-in-1 pairs, because the liner is what holds.

What it does not do. A liner is not a compression short, and a zip pocket is not waterproof. On a run in the rain, the phone goes in a bag.
