UPF 50+ Sun Shirts, in plain words

A sun shirt is a lighter idea than it sounds: a long sleeve knit that covers the arms, the neck and, with the hood up, the ears, so the sunscreen only has to go on the hands and the face. The Pudolla sun bench runs from the hooded shirts with a built-in mask that fishermen and hikers ask for, through plain long and short sleeve tees, to rash guards cut close for the water.

The maker rates every piece on this bench UPF 50+ and calls the knit quick-dry and breathable. Those are the maker's words, printed as they were given, and the maker publishes no test report for the range. What the fabric does in practice is cover skin, and covered skin does not burn. A shirt pulled tight or soaked through covers less than a dry one that fits loose, and the sun guide explains why.

How to pick the size

Sun shirts are meant to fit loose, and they run true to size for a loose fit. Take your usual size, and go up if you want air between the shirt and your back on a hot day. The hooded pairs run a little longer in the body so the hem stays down when you reach.

What it does not do. UPF 50+ is a rating for dry, unstretched fabric, given by the maker. Wet and stretched, the same shirt lets more sun through. It does not protect the skin it does not cover.
